After The Rain (306/365)

It poured here the past few days; a big storm came in from the Pacific and moved across us very slowly. Major flooding and damage all over the State.

To give you an idea of the water flow we just had here is a summary of the Salt River Watershed:

On November 1, Tonto Creek — which normally trickles into Roosevelt Lake at about 8 cubic feet per second — was running at more than 20,000. By the next morning, Roosevelt had risen more than 14 feet in a single day, taking on 194,839 acre-feet of water. That’s about 63 billion gallons, enough to cover the entire city of Phoenix seven inches deep. The lake went from 41 percent full to 53 percent overnight. Downstream, Saguaro Lake was so close to the top that SRP had to start releasing water, sending more than 54,000 cubic feet per second through the Salt River bed across the Valley. In one day, the entire SRP reservoir system went from slightly behind last year to nine points ahead.

That is some serious water.

More insurance work today, but made progress; the stress levels are coming down. Two are approved; one is waiting on more paperwork.

Went out to lunch with my better half, did some maintenance work around the house; changed out a doorbell camera and cleaned up after our rains. Lots of home server work, which is always fun. Working on status board stuff today. I have three battery backup UPS systems for the computers, NAS, and two home servers. I was able to link that data into the status board: battery install dates, runtimes, loads, and battery levels. It’s pretty cool to see all this info on one screen.

I dove into the new Readwise Books with both feet when it came out. I’ve been a Readwise subscriber since the beginning, and it’s my main reading hub, and I love it. So, a book reader too- sign me up! I’ve added all my ebooks to it and have been using it as my primary ebook reader since it came out, and I’m very impressed. Rock solid, with lots of options and neat lookup tools, highlighting, and tagging. Before Readwise Books, I primarily read in the Kobo iOS app, and it was good, but it had lots of quirks: it would crash from time to time, wouldn’t log my reading, and had obscure page refreshes and flashes. Readwise Books has none of that. I’m very impressed with it right now.

The one area they need to fix before I buy books from them is the ability to download a copy for personal use. That is a deal-breaker for me. Right now, I purchase books from Kobo and put them into Calibre and it’s all backed up to the Synology so I can put those books on whatever reader I want. Readwise needs to give me that option, but if that doesn’t work out, it’s alright; Kobo gets my ebook purchases, and I read them in Readwise books. I will add: when I use a true eReader, I still use a Kobo eReader; they are wonderful, and I’ve had no glitches with mine at all. I still tend to read primarily on my iPad and iPhone, though, and that has been Kobo’s weak spot: their iOS app.

Here’s to good books!

Cheers.
